DEPARTMENT OF THERAPEUTIC RADIOLOGY-RADIATION ONCOLOGY
Regarding evaluation and promotion of CLINICAL SCHOLAR TRACK faculty
I. INTRODUCTORY STATEMENT
This document describes the specific criteria and standards that will be used to evaluate whether candidates meet the general criteria for promotion in the clinical scholar track.
The criteria, standards, and procedures are applies without regard to race, religion, color, sex, national origin, handicap, age, veteran status, or sexual orientation.
The mission of the Medical School is to be a leader in enhancing the health of people through education, biomedical research, and clinical programs.
The Medical School's national leadership role depends upon its ability to invest in the pursuit of medical knowledge and technology that applies to the practice of medicine. It requires:
enabling the faculty to embrace the highest standards of quality and excellence in its collective and individual achievements;
committing to an environment where diversity enriches the Medical School;
a sound fiscal foundation;
responding to rapidly changing environment.
The mission of the Department of Therapeutic Radiology - Radiation Oncology is to conduct high quality education, cutting-edge basic and clinical research, and provide excellent patient care. The department is committed to and serves the broader mission established by the University of Minnesota Academic Health Center to be a leader in the ethical, innovative, and efficient discovery and dissemination of knowledge to enhance the health and well-being of people in Minnesota, the nation, and the world.
III. CRITERIA FOR PROMOTION
The criteria for promotion in the clinical track is the determination that the achievements of an individual have demonstrated the individual's potential to continue to contribute significantly to the mission of the University and to its programs of teaching, clinical research, and service over the course of the faculty member's academic career. The primary criteria for demonstrating this potential are effectiveness in teaching and professional distinction in teaching and or clinical research; outstanding discipline-related service contributions will also be taken into account where they are an integral part of the mission of the academic unit. The relative importance of the criteria may vary in different academic units, but each of the criteria must be considered in every decision.
The individual's participation in the governance of the institution and other services to the University and service to the academic unit may be taken into consideration, but are not in themselves basis for promotion.
Promotion may be granted at any time when the candidate has satisfied the requirements.
Department of Therapeutic Radiology-Radiation Oncology
Teaching activities may occur in a variety of educational settings and formats, including: didactic presentations, lectures, seminars, conferences, tutorials, laboratories, advising of students, case discussions, grand rounds, hospital and clinic rounds, patient care, surgical and other procedures, continuing education.
The following are educational activities in which competence and accomplishments in teaching can be demonstrated:
Participation and competence in teaching undergraduate (pre-baccalaureate) students.
Participation and competence in teaching professional students, including students in the MD curriculum, or other professional educational programs.
Service and distinction as a faculty adviser to post-MD residents (Medical Fellow Specialists or Medical Fellows), post-residency clinical fellows, or advanced degree candidates in medical disciplines, interdisciplinary programs or collaborative research programs.
Service as a faculty mentor or adviser to students in any of the above categories, including medical students in the clinical courses of the MD curriculum.
Service as a faculty mentor to students in any of the above categories who engage in research activities in the department.
Participation in teaching students in the certificate program in radiation therapy technology.
Organize, design, and/or coordinate educational venues for undergraduate medical education, GME or CME.
B. CLINICAL RESEARCH / SCHOLARSHIP
Scholarly activities of a faculty member will be evaluated according to the following standards:
Articles reporting quality clinical research or educational scholarship should be published in appropriate peer-reviewed journals related to the discipline include, but are not necessarily limited to:
- International Journal of Radiation Oncology
- Physics in Medicine and Biology
2. Publications in Monographs, Reviews Textbooks and Other Books
Publications through these modalities are part of the scholarly activities of a faculty member, and should be considered among other criteria as a basis for promotion.
3. Service as an Editor or a Member of the Editorial Board of a Reputable Journal or Monograph in a Biomedical Discipline
Examples of appropriate journals include, but are not necessarily limited to, those listed in 1 above.
4. Invited Participation in Symposia, Meetings and Seminars
The candidate should be invited by regional or national organizations to participate in symposia and meetings and should be invited to give seminars before peers in other institutions.
Service will be taken into consideration in making decisions on promotion. Performance of service, however exemplary, cannot substitute for the primary criteria, clinical research and teaching.
Department of Therapeutic Radiology-Radiation Oncology
The Department of Therapeutic Radiology-Radiation Oncology accepts and subscribes to the Statement on Criteria and Standards for Promotion of Faculty at the University of Minnesota Medical School, with the following standards specific to the department.
A. TO ASSISTANT PROFESSOR
Candidates for promotion to Assistant Professor are judged on the following standards:
- Qualifications: MD and/or PhD in the related field
- Teaching: Demonstrated teaching skills
-Clinical Research: Publications in peer-reviewed journals (published or in
- Training: completed residency / post-doctoral training
B. TO ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR
Candidates for promotion to Associate Professor are judged on the following standards:
- Qualifications: MD and/or PhD in the related field
- Teaching: Demonstrated teaching skills
- Clinical Research: Publications in peer-reviewed journals (only published and in
- Training: completed residency / post-doctoral training
- Establishment of a regional reputation as an educator and clinical investigator
Candidates for promotion to Professor are judged on the following standards:
- Publications: Significant number of high quality publications in peer-reviewed
journals, significantly increased productivity above that achieved at the
level of associate professor
- Teaching: Demonstrated teaching skills, with excellent teaching evaluations,
national or international reputation based on invitations to teach in national
- Research: National reputation of high quality teaching or research: significant impact in the field.
- National reputation in the profession.
The Medical School issues annually to each department, for distribution and information to faculty members, a set of instructions, memoranda and other documents, giving detailed information on the procedures to be followed in the preparation and consideration of each proposal for promotion in rank. The pertinent documents are identified as exhibits enclosed with a cover memorandum from the Dean.
Designated clinical track faculty members holding appropriate appointment and rank at affiliated hospitals are eligible to vote on proposals for promotion in rank of candidates, in accordance with approval for this procedure granted by the University.
