DEPARTMENT OF ANESTHESIOLOGY
CLINICAL SCHOLAR TRACK CRITERIA
As per the mission statement of the Medical School the Department of Anesthesiology faculty will conform to the following a) conduct high quality programs of research, education, and service, and b) contribute significantly to the provision of excellent health care for the people of Minnesota and globally.
II. INTRODUCTORY STATEMENT
The Department of Anesthesiology is committed to the overall objectives of the University of Minnesota and its Medical School in maintaining the highest standards of academic excellence in programs of undergraduate and graduate medical education. The Department faculty will provide a) necessary clinical services to patients, b) continuing medical education for physicians, and c) basic and applied research to perioperative clinical problems, critical care and pain.
The criteria for the promotion of faculty in the Clinical Scholar Track for the Department of Anesthesiology were developed to fit the departmental staff's activities and efforts. Traditionally, the Department of Anesthesiology in the Medical School at the University of Minnesota has spent 80-100% of their time in clinical services. Teaching and research are primarily clinically oriented. The concept of “movable bar” for each academic unit developed by the Council of Sciences Ad Hoc Committee on Promotion and Tenure has been utilized to develop criteria for promotion within the Clinical Scholar Track.
III. CRITERIA FOR PROMOTION OF CLINICAL SCHOLAR TRACK
The general criteria to allow promotion with the Clinical Scholar Track is the determination that the achievements of the individual demonstrate the individual's potential to contribute and continue to contribute significantly to the mission of the Medical School and Anesthesiology Department, that is, clinical science and services, education, research/scholarship, applied medical science, and administrative services. The promotion may be granted at any time when the candidate has satisfied the requirements.
IV. THE PROMOTION CRITERIA IN SEVERAL CATEGORIES ARE AS FOLLOWS
Teaching activities may occur in a variety of educational settings and formats including: didactic presentations, lectures, seminars, conferences, tutorials, laboratories, advising of students, case discussions, grand rounds, hospital and clinic rounds, patient care during surgical and other procedures, and as continuing medical education. A faculty member in the clinical scholar track regularly spends significant time in teaching in these venues. The following are educational activities in which competence and accomplishments in teaching can be demonstrated.
1. Regularly commits to the effort of teaching of undergraduate medical students, residents, fellows, physicians in practice, and the general public in the venues listed above.
2. Teaching in a laboratory situation and tutoring in research as well as the clinical setting for medical students, residents, Masters Degree and PhD. candidates.
3. Educational development and innovation: for example, development of new programs, curriculums, computer applications, textbooks, examination formats, and teaching methods.
4. Disseminatation of innovation in teaching through the local, regional, national, and international presentations.
5. Giving an invited lecture in local, regional, national or international specialty meetings to show recognition as leader in this subject.
6. Recognition in high quality teaching through awards and distinction in evaluations such as Dean's letter of appreciation for teaching effort to the medical school. Best teaching award (voted by trainees), residents and medical students evaluation of our staff for their teaching efforts, and others.
7. Involved in teaching educational methods such as director/coordinator of curriculum, year course segment, program site, and program leadership/membership on major educational committees.
B. Research/scholarship in Either Clinical, Basic Sciences, Applied Sciences
There may be verified as follows
1. Publications in peer-reviewed journals in the form of case reports, letter to the editor, or the results of research published in abstracts, symposiums, reviews, and papers in journals are all considered as excellent scholastic achievements.
2. Publications of reviews, best clinical practices or educational offerings in chapters, textbooks, syllabi, educational web-based programs, and videotapes.
3. Development of new curriculum offerings or educational materials including computer programs and video tapes that improve the quality of instruction.
4. Development of new technology or potential discoveries.
6. Participation in translational research that fosters discovery across disciplines.
7. Recognition by professional peers as an excellent communicator and lecturer and expert in the area as evidenced by invited participation in discipline-related symposia, meetings, conferences, and seminars at local, regional, national, and international levels.
8. Research developing original tests, procedures, a new care system, or new teaching methods are all considered for promotion.
9. A grant is not a necessary criterion for promotion in this Clinical Scholar Track. However, a peer reviewed grant is a good criterion for promotion.
C. Clinical Service or Applied Medical Science
1. Recognition by peers (such as department colleagues, residents, Certified Nurse Anesthetists, and medical students) as a health care professional committed to quality patient care or related patient services.
2. Participation in projects to monitor clinical outcomes.
3. Participates in projects to implement quality improvements.
4. Development of state of the art programs to deliver improved care or care to under-served populations.
5. A new clinical program development in the Department of Anesthesiology (such as pain clinics, ICU programs, clinical teaching programs) or introducing new technology into our Department (such as Transesophageal Echocardiogram (TEE), and others).
6. Participation with recognition in the Department's clinical teaching program or development of new clinical teaching programs.
7. Participation of excellence established locally and at a national level as evidenced by election to distinguished societies or selection to lists of excellence or by other documentation.
Service, although not a primary criteria for promotion will be taken into consideration in making a decision for promotion. Performance or service, however exemplary, cannot substitute for the primary criteria of scholarship and education. Excellence in service can be demonstrated, but is not limited to:
1. Active participation in or leadership of committees of the department, medical school, academic health center, university or hospital level.
2. Service and/or leadership in local, regional, and national organizations.
3. Outreach programs to local and rural communities related to teaching and applied medical science.
4. Service as an editor, member of editorial board, or asked by an editor of a journal to be a reviewer of an article to be published are also considered as reputable scholarship activities.
Appointment to the rank of Assistant Professor requires completion of clinical training to meet the requirements of the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) or an equivalent Board with the intention to soon be Board certified. Individuals being proposed to the rank of Assistant Professor should provide evidence of satisfactory performance in reputable anesthesiologists. Physicians must be able to demonstrate excellence in the practice of their specialty.
The standard and criteria for appointment or promotion to rank of Associate Professor in the Clinical Scholar Track are those stated by the University of Minnesota Medical School. Faculty are expected to support and foster all aspects of the academic mission of the Department of Anesthesiology, including research (clinical or basic) and scholarship, education, and applied medical science, and service with a significant portion of their time spent in clinical practice as described before. While it is understood that faculty in the Clinical Scholar Track will spend their time in a mix of promoting and scholarship education and applied medical sciences, the faulty may have a particular emphasis or distinction in either scholarship, research, or education. Note promotion criteria has been discussed in B, C & D criteria.
The standard and criteria for appointment or promotion to the rank of Professor in the Clinical Scholar Track are those stated by the University of Minnesota Medical School. Faculty are expected to support and foster all aspects of the academic mission of the Department of Anesthesiology, including research (clinical or basic) and scholarship, education, applied medical science and service with a significant portion of their time spent in clinical practice as described before.
In considering the Clinical Scholar Track promotion in rank, the medical school and it's departments will comply with the procedures which define the promotion of Clinical Scholar Track.
