Core Bibliographic Databases

CINAHL

Medline
Produced by the National Library of Medicine in the United States.  There are over 300,000 citations of educational relevance.  The database is available with subscription by many organizations, but can also be freely searched by PubMed at  www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi.

ERIC
The Education Resource Information Center is the world’s largest database of journal and non-journal education literature.  There are over 1.1 million citations from 1966-present.  The address for searching can be found at www.eric.ed.gov/.

PsycINFO
An abstract database of psychological literature that has over 100,000 citations related to education, but very few indexed results in the more specific area of nursing education.  There are many organizations with a subscription to the database, but www.apa.org/psycinfo/ is the homepage.

Keyword Databases

Research and Development Resource Base (RDRB)
RDRB is a literature database for educators and health professions that study program evaluation, physician performance, change, and health care outcomes.  There are over 250 results of nursing education and can be located at the free link at www.cme.utoronto.ca/rdrb.

Topics in Medical Education (TIMELIT)
Database covers medical education by searching journals of medical education, general education, specialized areas of education, medicine and medical specialties.  There are  over 10,000 citations regarding nursing education.  TIMELIT is freely available at www.timelit.org.

Additional Databases

British Nursing Index (BNI)
British nursing database with home address www.bniplus.co.uk/index.html.  BNI is smaller than CINAHL, but searches over 220 related journals to find information that may not be in some larger databases, including CINAHL.

Science Citation Index (SCI)
The SCI searches for bibliographic information with no disciplinary boundaries.  The database cites from over 3,700 science and technical journals of more than 100 disciplines.  SCI is freely available at www.isinet.com/products/citation/sci/.

“Grey Literature” Search
To search for information that may not be published or is on the web in non-peer reviewed sources.  A few examples of these sites are listed below:

Computer Retrieval of Information on Scientific Papers (CRISP)
CRISP is a database that includes federally funded biomedical research projects conducted at universities, hospitals, and other research institutions.  There are over 50 projects of nursing education, but most are related to patient interaction.  The database is freely available at www.commons.cit.nih.gov/crisp/.

Dissertation Abstracts
ProQuest Digital Dissertations provides abstracts of the most current two years of over 225,000 citations and abstractions freely available from www.lib.umi.com/dissertations/gateway.

Biomed Central
An independent database that provides open and free access to peer-reviewed biomedical research from over 350 journals, including BMC Nursing.  The search can be found at www.biomedcentral.com.

Google
www.google.co.uk is the world’s most popular search engine that is very accurate.

Hotbot
www.hotbot.com searches four different search engines (Google, Alltheweb, Teoma, and Inktomi) and has search options to choose from.

Vivísimo
vivisimo.com is recommended for broad conceptual searches because of its clustering and algorithm technique of retrieving information from other search engines.
